Gujarat is not one landscape. It is six. A CSR plantation that treats them as the same will fail in at least three of them.
This guide is for CSR teams and plantation managers working in Gujarat — or evaluating vendors who claim to. It covers the state's bioclimatic zones, the soil types that determine species survival, and how Gardenia's 616-species library is filtered for Gujarat-specific conditions. It is not a species list to copy. It is a framework for choosing.
Gujarat's six bioclimatic zones
Gujarat's State Action Plan on Climate Change identifies six bioclimatic zones, each with distinct rainfall, temperature, and vegetation patterns. A species that thrives in one zone may not survive in another — even within the same district.
- Semi-arid inland (Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Vadodara): 600-900 mm rainfall, deep alluvial to black cotton soil, hot summers. The most common zone for CSR plantations. Supports the widest species range.
- Arid Kutch: 300-500 mm rainfall, sandy and saline soil, extreme heat. Drought-tolerant species only. Most generalist species fail here.
- Saurashtra peninsula: 400-700 mm rainfall, shallow black soil over basalt, undulating terrain. Species must tolerate shallow soil and wind exposure.
- Coastal saline belt (Gulf of Kutch, Gulf of Khambhat, South Gujarat coast): Saline to saline-alkaline soil, tidal influence, high humidity. Mangroves and salt-tolerant species only.
- North Gujarat (Banaskantha, Patan, Mehsana): 400-600 mm rainfall, sandy loam to saline soil, groundwater depletion. Arid-zone species with deep root systems.
- South Gujarat (Surat, Valsad, Navsari, Dang): 1,200-2,000 mm rainfall, lateritic to alluvial soil, humid. Supports the highest species diversity in Gujarat — including evergreen species that fail elsewhere.
A vendor who proposes the same species list for a site in Bhuj and a site in Surat does not understand Gujarat. The first step in any CSR plantation here is identifying which zone the site falls in.
Soil types and what they mean for species
Gujarat has three dominant soil types, each with different water-holding capacity, drainage, and chemistry. A soil test is the single most important pre-plantation step — it determines which species from the library are even in play.
Black cotton soil (Regur)
High clay content, swelling and shrinking with moisture, deep cracks in summer. Found across Saurashtra and central Gujarat. Retains water well but has poor drainage. Species must tolerate heavy, cracking clay — many shallow-rooted species fail. Best suited for: hardy deep-rooted trees, certain grasses, and species adapted to vertisols.
Alluvial soil
Deposited by rivers, well-drained, moderate fertility. Found in the Ahmedabad-Vadodara belt and south Gujarat. The most forgiving soil type — supports the widest species range. Good for Miyawaki plantations with mixed species across all layers.
Sandy and saline soil
Low fertility, rapid drainage, high salt content in coastal and Kutch regions. The most challenging soil for afforestation. Requires salt-tolerant (halophytic) species with deep roots or specialised salt-excretion mechanisms. Standard species lists fail here entirely.
Before any species is selected, Gardenia conducts a soil test measuring pH, electrical conductivity (salinity), organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and texture. The results filter the 616-species library down to the subset that can survive on that specific site.
Species by zone: what works where
The following are indicative species — not a prescription. Actual selection depends on site-specific soil tests, water availability, and microclimate. But these species have proven survival records in their respective zones.
Semi-arid inland (Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Vadodara)
Canopy: Azadirachta indica (Neem), Albizia lebbeck (Kala Siris), Ficus benghalensis (Banyan), Ficus religiosa (Peepal), Mangifera indica (Mango). Sub-canopy: Pongamia pinnata (Karanj), Cassia fistula (Amaltas), Millettia pinnata. Shrub: Lantana camara (controlled), Nerium oleander. This zone supports the highest species diversity — 60-80 species per acre is achievable for Miyawaki.
Arid Kutch
Canopy: Prosopis cineraria (Khejri), Acacia nilotica (Babul), Salvadora oleoides, Capparis decidua. Sub-canopy: Ziziphus nummularia, Calligonum polygonoides. Drought-tolerant species with deep taproots are essential. Avoid water-loving species entirely. Expect 20-30 species per acre — lower density but higher survival.
Saurashtra peninsula
Canopy: Butea monosperma (Flame of the Forest), Acacia senegal, Anogeissus latifolia, Wrightia tinctoria. Sub-canopy: Nyctanthes arbor-tristis (Parijat), Grewia tiliaefolia. Shallow-rooted species that tolerate rocky substrates. Wind-firm species are critical on exposed ridges.
Coastal saline belt
Mangroves: Avicennia marina (Grey Mangrove), Rhizophora mucronata, Ceriops tagal. Salt-tolerant terrestrial: Salvadora persica, Suaeda nudiflora, Atriplex spp. These species tolerate soil EC above 4 dS/m. Standard terrestrial species die at this salinity level. Coastal plantations require specialised nursery stock and tidal zone mapping.
South Gujarat (Surat, Valsad, Dang)
Canopy: Tectona grandis (Teak), Terminalia crenulata, Dalbergia latifolia (Indian Rosewood), Lagerstroemia lanceolata. Sub-canopy: Syzygium cumini (Jamun), Grewia tiliifolia, Dillenia pentagyna. This zone supports evergreen and semi-evergreen species that cannot survive in the arid zones. 80-100+ species per acre is achievable.
Gujarat's planting calendar
Gujarat's monsoon typically arrives in mid-to-late June and withdraws by September. The planting window is narrow, and getting it right is the difference between establishment and failure.
- Late June to July: Primary planting window. Saplings go in after the first 2-3 monsoon showers have saturated the soil. This gives them 8-10 weeks of rainfall to establish roots before the dry season.
- August: Late planting for fast-establishing species. Risk: shorter establishment window before dry season. Acceptable for hardy species with rapid root growth.
- October-November: Secondary window for species that benefit from cooler temperatures and post-monsoon soil moisture. Not suitable for drought-sensitive species.
- December to May: Do not plant unless irrigation is guaranteed. Even with irrigation, establishment rates are lower and maintenance costs are higher.
The species library's phenology data — flowering and fruiting months for each species — is used to stagger planting so the plantation provides ecological function across the year. It also predicts when gap replacement should happen: after the first monsoon (September-October) and after the second monsoon (following September), when survival can be accurately assessed.

The site was characterised before any species were chosen: alluvial soil with moderate salinity, pH 7.8, low organic carbon (0.4%), and seasonal waterlogging in patches. The library was filtered to species tolerant of these conditions — eliminating drought-only species from Kutch, salt-only species from the coast, and evergreen species from south Gujarat.
The resulting planting matrix used 200+ species across canopy, sub-canopy, shrub, and ground cover layers. The plantation achieved 90%+ survival over 24 months of active maintenance, with gap replacement after the first and second monsoons. The established plots now function without intervention — no watering, no weeding. The full soil-to-canopy methodology is documented separately.
This is what "site-specific" means in practice. Not a list of species that sound native, but a filtered, tested, and monitored selection that matches the ground.
Common mistakes in Gujarat plantations
Planting eucalyptus or casuarina
Exotic fast-growing species are still proposed for Gujarat CSR plantations because they are cheap and available. They deplete groundwater, suppress undergrowth, and provide no biodiversity value. They are also ineligible for Green Credit Programme registration.
Ignoring salinity
Many sites in coastal Gujarat and parts of Kutch and north Gujarat have soil EC above 4 dS/m. Standard species die at this level. A soil test before species selection would catch this — but many vendors skip the test.
Planting outside the monsoon window
CSR budgets often don't align with ecological calendars. A plantation scheduled for March because the board approved the budget in February will struggle without irrigation. The right answer is to delay planting to the monsoon, not to force it on the wrong schedule.
Using the same species list across zones
A vendor who operates across Gujarat but carries one species list is not doing site-specific selection. The species that survive in Surat's humid lateritic soil are not the same ones that survive in Bhuj's saline sand.
